What is VITsta360?
VITsta360 is an immersive virtual campus exploration platform built for VIT Bhopal University. It delivers a photorealistic, interactive 360-degree walkthrough of the campus — allowing prospective students, families, and international applicants to navigate the physical environment from any device, anywhere in the world. VITsta360 transforms what was previously a logistical barrier — visiting a campus — into an on-demand, richly detailed digital experience.
Immersive 360° Navigation
The platform renders equirectangular panoramic imagery using WebGL-based techniques, projecting captured campus photography onto geometric scene objects that respond to mouse, touch, and gyroscope input. Users navigate between locations via interactive hotspots embedded directly within the panoramic view — clicking a pathway takes you down it, selecting a building moves you inside. The result is a spatial navigation model that mirrors the intuitive logic of physical exploration rather than a flat image gallery.
A Tool for Access and Equity
Campus visits impose real costs — travel expenses, time off, geographic constraints. VITsta360 democratizes access to the campus experience, giving students in remote regions, international applicants, and financially constrained prospective enrollees the same quality of campus familiarity as those who visit in person. For parents supporting their child's university decision from another city, it provides a genuine sense of place rather than a curated brochure.
Technical Approach
VITsta360 was built with an emphasis on broad device compatibility. The platform runs on standard WebGL without requiring dedicated VR hardware, making the experience accessible on desktop browsers, tablets, and mobile devices. For environments with compatible headsets, the spatial rendering provides a convincing VR-mode experience. Real-time mapping overlays contextualize the user's position within the broader campus layout, bridging the gap between ground-level immersion and bird's-eye orientation.
